Undead coming to a theatre near you
Zombsical, a lethal mix of musical theatre, zombies and improvisation, is on show at the Street Theatre.
Zombsical is an utterly deadly mix of
fake blood, hordes of the undead and a
string of spontaneous show tunes.
This unpredictable show out of
Melbourne makes its inter-state debut
at Improvention 2014, and puts the
moral pressure on audiences as actors
fight to survive on stage. Each
character makes their passionate bids
for survival through improvised song,
after which the audience decides who
lives and who dies.
"The first selections are usually
awkward as audiences don t want to
take an actor off the stage at that meta
level," Melbourne director Tim
"Once they get used to it it s a lot of
fun to have to make that dramatic
The stakes get higher as the
numbers of players dwindle on stage
and improvised action ramps up along
with the tension as actors strive to win
over the audience.
Showing on Friday, July 18,
Zombsical is part of a double bill with
international headline act David
Razowsky performing a duo show
with Perth s Glenn Hall called
Razowsky & Hall.
Improvention 2014 will be a five-
day festival of all things improvisation
running from July 16-20, revealing the
wide variety of approaches and styles
within the theatre genre.
Impro ACT founder Nick Byrne
said though improvisation appeared
impromptu, he began the theatre
school in the ACT because it s a skill
that can be mastered through step-by-
step instruction. This year marks the
10th anniversary of the Canberra
Impro Theatre Challenge, where
trained improvisation actors compete

Byrne said it was remarkable to see
the growth of the festival, something
he attributed to the unique atmosphere
created through improvisation.
"Audiences are coming expecting to
laugh; we don t always play for laughs
but the element of the unexpected
makes it funny, regardless if we are
trying to be comedic or not," he said.
"The audience can feel the risk that
is taking place. They re on the edge of
the seat with us and can feel what we

POLICE WARN AGAINST
ACT Policing has received reports of
fraudulent letters containing an old
Australian Federal Police logo
received by residents throughout
Canberra suburbs in 2014. The letters
display a photocopy of an old AFP
logo and many of the letters refer to
upcoming court appearances, using
false names. The letters are not
threatening and make no attempt to
scam recipients. Police encourage the
public not to be alarmed if they
receive a letter of this nature and to
contact ACT Policing on 131 44 or at
the nearest police station.
Dropping the children off at school is
going to get easier at Majura and
Macgregor primary schools with the
addition of more parking spaces.
At Majura Primary School 23
parking spaces will be added to the
rear car park while its front car park
will be upgraded and reconfigured.
Work on the expansion of
Macgregor Primary School will allow
22 new spaces to be added next to the
playing fields. The school s front car
park will also be reconfigured.
This $484,000 project will finish
the school s expansion works, which
also included extending the school
and refurbishing existing spaces in
"We have listened to the concerns
of parents and carers about parking
arrangements at schools and have
included these works in the expansion
projects of both of these schools,"
ACT Minister for Education and
Training Joy Burch said.
