FRED HOLLOWS FOUNDATION
Funds gifted to Burundi's eye camp
The Fred Hollows Foundation's chief executive officer Brian Doolan and founding director Gabi Hollows with
Femke Sissingh Meijer and her mother, Saskia Malherbe.
Mary Lynn Mather
The Fred Hollows Foundation s
12-year-old ACT junior ambassador,
Femke Sissingh Meijer, nominated a
small African country to receive $2500
in sponsored funding.
She made her decision when she
visited the non-government
organisation s Sydney office in
December with her mother.
Burundi is a really small place
with a really high population and with
lots of poor people, Femke said.
She chose to give the equivalent of
100 cataract surgery operations to the
program, which aims to end avoidable
blindness in the nation s remote
northern and eastern provinces.
In 2014, the foundation set up 19
eye camps in the region, carried out
16,000 screenings, performed 281
cataract operations and trained two eye
Femke said she approved of the way
the local people were taught how to
fix eyes , enabling others to see the
world they are living in while
breaking the cycles of poverty.
The Burundi cataract surgery
program is run in partnership with
Clinique de l Oeil, with a team of two
nurses, one ophthalmic clinical officer
and one driver.
They offer free screening and
services for 10,000 people in eastern
Burundi and are able to treat minor eye
Surgery is free, as is transport for
patients requiring operations; children
are among them.
Femke s mother, Saskia Malherbe,
applauded the initiative, saying it had
been a great experience for her
I think they do impressive work
and give young people a chance to
really understand what it s like to
dedicate their lives to helping other
people, she said.
Femke sees how she can do that in
a big organisation and help people all
over the world live better lives.
Caring and empathy are qualities
Femke has in abundance, which is why
she was recognised for her community
citizenship and compassion.
Femke will return to her old
school , Giralang Primary, to talk
about the foundation s work in
eradicating avoidable blindness in
developing countries and improving
the health of Indigenous Australians.
She also hopes to raise awareness of
its goals when she starts at Lyneham
High after the holidays.
I m really excited, she said.

Ribbon sandwiches, mini quiches,
good quality bite-size cakes and plenty
of Scotch and soda -- that s the menu
for my Mum s wake.
While holidaying with her, Chris
and I have caught up with news of
family and friends, helped organise her
overseas trip and discussed end-of-life
and funeral plans.
The beginning of a new year is a
time for resolutions and fresh starts.
It s also a time to tick off the items on
the to-do list that are still lingering
from last year.
So for those 69 per cent of
Australians who are willing to become
organ and tissue donors, please sign up
and have the discussion with your
family to make your views known.
According to DonateLife, 60 per
cent of you have already done so,
which is terrific. But that still leaves
40 per cent who haven t. Sixty per cent
of families give consent for organ and
tissue donation to proceed so it s
vitally important you have that
Why? Because about 1600 people
are on transplant waiting lists at any
time. And one organ and tissue donor
can transform the lives of 10 or more
Mum has made her intentions plain
for her final farewell, right down to the
colour of the napkins and the Frank
Sinatra playlist. We re also crystal
clear on her consent to donate her
organs and tissue.
