IN LOVING MEMORY
Memorial forest fills up, funding short
Conservation Volunteers Australia manager Cath Spratley walks through the Landcare Memorial Forest in McKellar. Photo: Jasmin Floto
There are more than 1000 plaques
commemorating loved ones set
neatly against rows of trees in one
of Canberra s suburbs.
It is a vast memorial in McKellar
but largely unknown beyond the
suburbs which immediately
Last week, and for the first time
in years, Albert Tolley and his
family held a small ceremony and
dedicated a new memorial to
recognise his parents.
"They both died and they were
both cremated and their ashes were
disposed on my brother s
property, he said.
We weren t quite sure where
they were any more. We decided
everyone has got to have their name
somewhere on this planet.
"They were just ordinary people
-- dad was a fitter and turner that
ended up as a goat farmer at
Mudgee and mum was a housewife
and had nine kids.
Mr Tolley made a $1000
donation to the forest, which
allowed Conservation Volunteers
Australia to replace 17 trees and
undertake lots of cleaning up.
The forest was intended to
generate funding for Landcare
Australia projects but any money
received over the years has been
ploughed back into maintaining it.
Volunteer Ken Horsfall was there
right from day one. Julia Anderson,
wife of former deputy prime
minister John Anderson, opened the
Landcare Memorial Forest in
McKellar on November 28, 1998.
"In those early days people
actually paid for a plaque and a
tree, he said.
"The funding right now is an
We don t have any funding
coming from Landcare Australia
and I guess what we are sort of
hoping is that people will decide to
put their hand in their pocket and
pay to have a tree put in for
"That money will go towards
But the memorial is running out
of space. Conservation Volunteers
Australia manager Cath Spratley
said there were only about 10 spots
She said when those final spots
were taken volunteers would need
to consider other funding plans.
"We are thinking of a couple of
options, Ms Spratley said.
"We might do a memorial wall to
try and keep it going.
We d love to fill it up and then
do some consultation and see where
If the same rate of inquiries for
memorials kept up, she estimated a
consultation could take place
within 18 months.
