So poor, but giving it away
A Queanbeyan Council motion
to donate $8800 to a racing club
was objected to by three
councillors, one of whom, Cr
Brown, insisting it was an
industry ruled by the gambling
dollar (Council funding for
racing opposed, Chronicle,
November 4, page 10).
Meanwhile, Premier Mike
Baird is reforming tax to
return NSW racing
$100 million, plus a grant of
In addition to the bad vibes it
gives in relation to gambling, an
industry devoid of redeeming

It is especially galling in

Racing is an industry, with
some major players involving
investments against which this
sum seems a trifle, so it might be
reasonably queried why bother.

When, in 2010, the special

ratepayers were told potholes
would remain unfilled unless
this extra impost was imposed.
As predicted, council has
become addicted to additional
funds it rakes in.
But council can t have its cake
and eat it too, declaring it s
broke while giving away money.
Albert M. White,
Further to Anne Duffy s letter (Chronicle,
November 4, page 2), I add my own
experience of parking at Westfield Woden.
For years seniors were offered a third hour
of free parking in recognition that it might
take longer for the elderly to get around. I
took advantage of this during my recovery
from a hip replacement and treatment for
breast cancer. When I had my second hip
replacement I discovered that this service
had been withdrawn.
I could afford to pay for the extra
parking, but was outraged at such a cynical
money grab affecting other more
vulnerable members of our society. I would
have thought that the negative impact of
this decision was worse than the few
dollars saved each year.
Since then I have shopped at the
Hyperdome in Tuggeranong, who reward
my loyalty with an extra hour of parking.
